91% of YC 2026 Summer Batch Companies are AI-related, Application Layer Drops to 39%
The YC 2026 Summer Batch includes 236 companies and 470 founders, with 91% related to AI. The proportion of model layer companies increased from 8% to 20%, while the application layer dropped from 55% to 39%. The number of horizontal application companies decreased from 58 to 32, while vertical applications remained at 25. In the Spring batch, 45% of companies delivered autonomous agents, which fell to 33% in the summer, and the mention of 'agent' in introductions decreased from 27% to 19%. 21 companies focus on computational infrastructure, 11 on inference costs, and others are involved in training data and reinforcement learning environments. Scale AI was listed as an alternative target by 8 companies. The proportion of industrial companies rose from 12% to 24%, with 45 companies delivering physical products, of which 24 are robots or physical AI, and 21 companies operate their own businesses rather than selling software. Among the founders in this batch, 37% are students or have graduated in the last two years, with 59 being entirely student teams. The dropout rate increased from 3% to 9%, and the proportion of repeat founders decreased from 32% to 23%, with 84% having a technical background. Berkeley, MIT, and Stanford have 39, 32, and 25 founders, respectively. Amazon is the largest source of talent. The number of sales and marketing AI companies dropped from 18 to 6, with only 19 founders coming from AI labs, accounting for 4%. 8 founding teams come from the same previous employer.
