Bitcoin's Share at 1.2%, 1.7% is a 2025 Estimate
According to River's 2026 report, Bitcoin (BTC) accounts for 1.2% of the global money basket. The 1.7% figure is an estimate from August 2025, which could lead to misunderstandings if cited as the latest figure. River explained in its report "2026 Bitcoin Adoption Trends," released on February 24, 2026, that BTC has established itself as a global asset. The 1.7% figure was derived from a calculation based on a money basket worth $138 trillion, which includes fiat currency M2 and gold. If BTC's market capitalization is set at approximately $2.4 trillion, the share would be 1.7%, and if $2.29 trillion is applied, it would be 1.66%. The difference between the two figures arises from the reference point and the formula used, and is not related to changes in BTC adoption trends. The 2025 wording implied that "Bitcoin has risen to 1.7% of global money," while the 2026 report presented 1.2%. The definition of the money basket is also important. The 2025 calculation included fiat currency M2 and gold, but excluded silver, platinum, and palladium. M2 refers to the money supply that includes cash, demand deposits, and short-term deposits. River describes the expansion of BTC adoption through network indicators and changes in holding entities, stating that BTC is moving into a maturity phase. For Korean readers, the importance of the 1.7% figure lies in the optical illusion when used in isolation.
