Cardano Development Transitions to External Teams: Input Output Reduces Its Role in the Network
Cardano development is entering a new phase: Input Output is transferring key parts of the blockchain's core infrastructure to independent teams, aiming to reduce the network's dependence on the company that created it and to move more swiftly towards a practical model of decentralization.
Input Output stated that this step will continue the course towards decentralization for Cardano. This involves not just one separate module, but a whole set of important areas:
- Cardano Haskell Node
- Plutus Smart Contract Platform
- Daedalus Wallet
- Hydra Scaling Solution
- Developer Engagement
Cardano is a blockchain platform that has already handed over protocol and governance solutions to the community. Now, the focus is shifting to the development and maintenance of software.
For the ecosystem, this is a significant moment: responsibility for critical infrastructure should be distributed among several independent participants, rather than remaining in the hands of a single organization.
Who Will Take on Key Components of Cardano
Some tasks will be transferred to specialized companies. Among them are Se7en Labs, a development agency working with the Solana blockchain infrastructure, and Teragone, a team engaged in software and cryptographic research.
Teragone is already playing a notable role in the development of Mithril, a stake-based signature protocol for the Cardano blockchain. Now, Se7en Labs and Teragone are expected to take responsibility for specific elements of the infrastructure. The transfer will begin in August and continue until 2027.
"The final stage is the complete decentralization of node development and reference schemes," said Input Output CEO and Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson.
The plan includes support for at least three implementations of Cardano. They will be written in different languages:
- Haskell
- Rust
- Go
Formal specifications will be overseen by participating organizations, including Intersect and Pragma, while further development will occur through voting and discussion within the community.
Input Output Shifts Focus to Research and New Projects
After transferring part of the core development, Input Output will concentrate a significant portion of its resources on research and new directions through IO Labs and IO Ventures. For the company, this means stepping away from the role of a single center of technical control and moving towards a more distributed model of participation in the ecosystem.
This approach should reduce Cardano's dependence on Input Output. At the same time, it will serve as a test for independent teams: whether they can maintain critical software without slowing down development and facing coordination issues.
For the crypto market, this restructuring is also important because any major cryptocurrency with a developed infrastructure eventually faces the question of governance sustainability. Decentralization should work not only at the protocol level but also at the level of the teams that write and maintain the code.
Weak Network Activity Increases Pressure on the Project
The announcement came against the backdrop of modest performance from the Cardano Network. In terms of Total Value Locked (TVL), the gap looks like this:
- Cardano Network - about $70 million.
- Tron - over $4 billion.
- Solana - over $4 billion.
The pressure is also intensified by the dynamics of its own token. On Friday, ADA was trading at around 16 cents. This is nearly 95% lower than its all-time high in September 2021, when the price reached $3.10.
Charles Hoskinson recently acknowledged that Cardano is going through a challenging period. According to him, further setbacks may become part of the network's development. He also reminded that he had previously warned: worsening market conditions would lead to the closure of many projects.
"Even Cardano has to go through very unpleasant growing pains. Bones must be broken. Sharp phases of growth, entries, and exits must occur. Failures are necessary to strengthen trust in the system," said Charles Hoskinson in a video.
Hoskinson also noted that Cardano needs more specialized teams that can set goals and direct resources. He acknowledged that the network has stopped expanding, so the redistribution of development should be one way to restore momentum to the ecosystem.
In this model, not only the code but also the data will play an important role, based on which the community can assess the quality of solutions, the speed of development, and the resilience of new teams. For Cardano, this is a transition to a more mature system, where key decisions depend not on a single company but on the collective work of the entire ecosystem.
"I am very proud that we have reached the final stage, where IO Labs hands over the Haskell node to the community for oversight and control. Our partners are ready, and now the ecosystem has many different options," said Charles Hoskinson.
