ChatGPT and Others Recognized as Very Large Online Platforms, Implementing Stricter Content Regulation
The European Commission has classified OpenAI's ChatGPT as a very large online search engine, while Reddit and Roblox have been designated as very large online platforms due to their monthly active user counts exceeding 45 million in the EU region. These platforms are required to enhance their handling of illegal and harmful content under the Digital Services Act (DSA), submit transparency reports and risk mitigation plans, and pay annual fees to the EU, with violations potentially incurring fines of up to 6% of global annual revenue. The DSA also mandates platforms to strengthen protections for minors and ensure advertising transparency, and EU regulatory authorities have initiated over a dozen investigations into various online platforms based on this law.
