Coinbase Initiates Discussions on Bitcoin Quantum Security
Coinbase gathered developers, cryptographers, institutional custodians, and hardware wallet experts to discuss asset transfer solutions for Bitcoin's response to quantum computing. The key agenda was to explore how to apply quantum-resistant signature technology to Bitcoin and the procedures for migrating existing assets to the new security framework. On the 9th, O'Daily reported that Coinbase held an informal 'Post-Quantum Bitcoin Seminar' at Stanford University. Participants reviewed the level of advancement in quantum computing, quantum-resistant cryptographic technologies, and signature methods applicable to Bitcoin. Discussions also included Ethereum's quantum security plans, the requirements of institutional custodians, and ways to enhance Bitcoin's security. Currently, no specific technology has gained consensus in the industry, and each candidate technology varies in terms of security, transaction data size, and hardware performance. During the transition process, individual users, institutional custodians, and wallet services will need to change how they generate and store new keys, and there will also be a need to transfer existing assets to new addresses. Coinbase announced on its official blog on July 23 that it plans to hold a joint working session with Stanford in August. Coinbase emphasized that while quantum computers do not pose an immediate threat to the blockchain, preparations should not be delayed. This discussion did not result in any immediate network changes or asset transfers.
