Ethereum Enables Fee Payments Without ETH Through Frame Transactions
Ethereum is enabling the payment of transaction fees without the direct need for ETH by implementing the proposal for "Frame Transactions." This feature allows users to pay transaction fees using another application or account. The EIP-8141 proposal was approved in a meeting on August 27 and is set to be introduced in the "Hegota" upgrade in 2027. EIP-8141 divides transactions into several stages, which include checking user permissions and identifying the fee payer. For example, an application can pay the transaction fee or receive the equivalent from the user in stablecoins. This proposal also allows users to perform several interdependent steps within a single transaction. Another important feature of this proposal is greater flexibility in managing Ethereum account keys. Users can replace the controlling key with a new key or one that is resistant to quantum attacks. The specifications for EIP-8141 are still in draft form and may change.
