JPMorgan: US Treasury Buyback Data Indicates Decline in Bid Quality
JPMorgan strategists noted in a report that the U.S. Treasury accepted a wider variety of bonds in Thursday's buyback operation, with a final transaction size of $5.2 billion, below the set maximum of $6 billion. This may indicate a decline in bid quality compared to recent operations. Despite the larger scale of this operation, the total amount of bids submitted remains at a recent low, and the ratio of bids to the cap has fallen to the lowest level since the launch of the buyback program in this sector. The U.S. currently maintains a budget deficit of 6% while approaching full employment, and this issue will not be resolved without substantial fiscal consolidation.
