Korean Exchange to Test Evening Trading Next Week to Assess Global Demand

The Korea Exchange will extend trading hours until 8 PM on September 18, breaking the conventional Asian trading hours in a bid to attract global investor demand. This marks the first step towards the exchange's goal of 24-hour trading starting December 2027, with the regular closing time currently set at 3:30 PM. This initiative is the first of its kind among major Asian exchanges, aligning with the global trend towards round-the-clock markets. The new measure will test whether the Korea Exchange can maintain liquidity during a longer trading day and demonstrate investor demand for additional trading hours. Lee Young-jae, a senior investment manager at Baillie Gifford, stated that the longer trading window enhances investor flexibility and may attract more trading-oriented investors. Edward Kim, head of Korean equity sales at Bank of America, pointed out that this is an important step in the evolution of accessibility for global investors in the Korean capital market.
