Korean Retail Investors Reduce Holdings in US Semiconductor Stocks in September, Net Buy Semiconductor Leveraged ETFs
From September 1 to 4, individual investors in South Korea significantly reduced their holdings in several US semiconductor stocks and shifted towards increasing their positions in semiconductor leveraged ETFs. During this period, South Korean retail investors net sold over $100 million in Micron, $68.61 million in SanDisk, $49.37 million in Marvell Technology, and $15.56 million in NVIDIA. SK Hynix's ADR saw a net sell of $46.16 million during the same period, following a cumulative net purchase of $811 million until the end of August. Meanwhile, South Korean retail investors net bought $431 million in SOXL (Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares), which aims to achieve three times the daily return of the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index. Market analysts believe that this "sell individual stocks, buy sectors" strategy may reflect South Korean retail investors' efforts to reduce the risks associated with holding individual chip companies while continuing to bet on the overall upside potential of the semiconductor sector. Some investors chose to take profits at the individual stock level after significant gains in semiconductor stocks but maintained or even increased their overall exposure to the semiconductor industry through leveraged ETFs.
