Low-Income Workers Affected by Fare Increases in Kyiv
The fare increase in Kyiv has most severely impacted low-income workers who do not have the option to work remotely, such as medical professionals, educators, librarians, and municipal workers. According to analyst Alexander Grechko, those with minimum wages are experiencing the greatest impact from the rising tariffs. For instance, security guards earn 14,975 UAH, promoters 17,500 UAH, and cleaners 18,600 UAH. Starting from July 15, 2026, the new tariffs for public transport have raised the cost of a single ticket nearly fourfold to 30 UAH. The price of a trip depends on the number of trips purchased; for example, 1-9 trips cost 30 UAH, while 50 trips cost 25 UAH each. Monthly passes have also been introduced, where the cost of a single trip will be around 23.3-23.6 UAH. From August 1, a unified electronic ticket was introduced for 60 UAH, allowing free transfers within 90 minutes. The price increase has made transportation in Kyiv less accessible compared to other European capitals, with Kyiv residents now spending four times more of their salary on fares than residents of Paris, Berlin, or Vienna.
