US Approves Iranian President and Foreign Minister to Attend UN General Assembly in New York
The U.S. State Department has confirmed that it has approved Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, along with other senior officials, to travel to New York to attend the high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly next week. Iran's "core delegation" and necessary staff will be allowed to participate in UNGA activities, but they will face travel restrictions and be prohibited from purchasing luxury goods and other restricted items according to U.S. policy. This Iranian delegation is smaller than last year's, and the decision comes amid ongoing U.S.-Iran tensions that have lasted for more than six months. Currently, there has been no significant progress on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming negotiations over Iran's nuclear issues. As the host country of the United Nations headquarters, the U.S. is typically limited by host country obligations and finds it difficult to prevent foreign leaders from attending the UNGA. Previously, the U.S. has also issued limited visas to representatives from conflict-affected countries and imposed restrictions on their activities. The decision to approve the Iranian delegation's visas comes just a day after the U.S. denied entry to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his delegation to the UNGA.
