US Urges G20 to Refrain from AI Regulation
The United States has proposed the "Carolina Principles" to the G20, urging restraint in establishing new regulations and supervisory bodies related to artificial intelligence (AI). During the G20 ministerial meeting held on December 1 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the US called on member countries to approach AI regulation with caution. This discussion is expected to lead to the G20 summit in Miami in December. The "Carolina Principles" emphasize basic research and commercialization, encouraging participating countries to limit new regulations to new issues and to explore ways to expand commercial opportunities for new technologies. Ministers from Japan, Germany, France, India, and South Korea attended the meeting, with Elon Musk participating via video, arguing that the EU's technology regulations hinder progress. The US proposal comes at a time when the EU is already implementing its AI Act. It remains uncertain whether the entire G20 will agree to the US proposal, and Canada has stated that it will emphasize the balance between AI development and public trust and safety.
