Vitalik Buterin: Holding Cryptocurrency Bets on Network Security Defense
Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin expressed disagreement with the view that "AI hackers mean cybersecurity is doomed to fail." He believes that cybersecurity is inherently defensive, and those who hold cryptocurrencies are implicitly betting on this point. Vitalik pointed out that if AI can prove the Navier-Stokes equations and Fermat's Last Theorem, it could also prove "this program is secure" as a mathematical theorem. He used the encrypted communication application Signal as an example, emphasizing that the definition of "security" is complex, involving aspects such as message forgery, active interference, server breaches, and key leaks. Historically, security failures often occurred because only the self-identified secure parts were verified, neglecting other code. Today, it is essential to verify the entire program, including databases, networks, and cache layers, which modern AI can achieve. Vitalik stressed that this is not a competition to see who discovers vulnerabilities first, but rather about making the code itself more resilient. This is the direction for Ethereum in the coming years, especially as blockchains with scalability and privacy require truly secure software, and significant progress has already been made.
