Alex Jones Warns of Government Intervention Risks for XRP
In a statement to XRP investors, Alex Jones highlighted the possibility that governments may turn to private assets if pressure in the global financial system increases. Jones emphasized that he was not making any predictions about the price of XRP and that he is not an expert in the cryptocurrency market. He noted that in the event of a breakdown in the banking system, public authorities might seek to take control of assets. He expressed that crypto assets, bank accounts, and real estate could be targeted. Jones stated that his comments should not be interpreted as a stance against XRP or Bitcoin, asserting that he views cryptocurrencies positively, but the likelihood of governments taking drastic measures during a systemic financial crisis is concerning. His remarks brought attention to the issues of bank liquidation and restructuring in the United States and the European Union. In the U.S., the FDIC can intervene with broad powers in the event of a failure of an insured bank, but it notes that crypto assets are not covered by federal deposit insurance. In the European Union, the BRRD allows for the restructuring of banks in distress. XRPL validator Vet found Jones's comments sensational and pointed out that the FDIC has not issued a policy statement indicating that it could directly seize crypto assets. Vet reminded that in the event of a failure of a bank covered by FDIC insurance, depositors are protected up to $250,000 if they are eligible.
