OpenAI's Self-Developed Jalapeno Chip Outperforms NVIDIA's GB300 in Tests, Set for Use This Year
OpenAI's self-developed Jalapeno AI chip, created in collaboration with Broadcom, has outperformed NVIDIA's GB300 in tests, leading in both power efficiency and response speed. The chip consumes approximately 700 watts and is primarily designed for AI inference rather than model training, with OpenAI planning to begin its use later this year. The tests utilized smaller open-source models, as well as third-party models from DeepSeek and Dark Side of the Moon, with a more pronounced advantage observed on the Kimi model. Jalapeno has yet to be tested against NVIDIA's next-generation Vera Rubin chip. OpenAI stated that the second-generation chip has entered the late development stage, with tape-out expected in the coming months, while emphasizing that NVIDIA remains an important chip supplier.
