Over 1,500 Trucks Stranded at Cristo Redentor Pass Due to Snow
The Cristo Redentor International Pass, which connects Argentina and Chile, remains closed due to a severe snowstorm. More than 1,500 trucks are stranded in Mendoza, causing logistical complications. The provincial government has implemented a special operation to assist drivers and prevent road congestion. Currently, around 1,550 cargo vehicles are halted, distributed across strategic sectors. Nearly 580 trucks are concentrated in the high mountain area, while others have been moved to logistical spaces in lower areas to relieve pressure on National Route 7. The operation includes basic services such as access to water, restrooms, and medical assistance, along with the presence of security forces. The reopening of the pass will not mean an immediate normalization of traffic, as it is estimated that the total flow release could take between five and six days. A staggered opening is expected, utilizing a daily circulation window of approximately 12 hours, allowing between 500 and 600 trucks to pass per day. Waiting zones will be implemented on Route 7 to release vehicles in controlled batches. Despite the opening, conditions will remain difficult due to snow accumulation and the state of the roadway, which will depend on the weather and clearing efforts.
