Ukraine Receives $60 Million from Japan for World Bank Project
Ukraine's budget has received $60 million as part of the World Bank project "Enhancing Access and Resilience of Education in Crisis Conditions in Ukraine" (LEARN). The funding is provided through credit guarantees from the Japanese government via the ADVANCE Ukraine fund. The funds were disbursed after the World Bank confirmed that Ukraine had met the necessary reforms and indicators related to disbursements. In particular, Ukraine updated the criteria for allocating subsidies for the purchase of school buses and the establishment of safe shelters in educational institutions. This funding is part of a broader support package for the education sector: the tranche is part of the third additional financing from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development amounting to $286 million under Japanese guarantees, signed in June 2026; the total funding for the LEARN program amounts to $520 million; the funding aims to improve teaching and learning conditions during the war and strengthen management capacity, with the Ministry of Education and Science being the main executor of the program. Japan provided Ukraine with $850 million in budget support in 2026, bringing the total assistance from Tokyo since the beginning of the invasion to over $9.8 billion.
