U.S. Plans to Formulate Middle East Strategy to Contain Iran and Normalize Relations with Saudi Arabia
The Trump administration is drafting a Middle East strategy following the end of the Iran war, focusing on establishing a regional cooperation mechanism to contain Iran and expanding normalization of relations between Israel and neighboring countries. The plan is still in its early stages and aims to guide Middle East policy during the last two years of Trump's term. Recently, Trump has held two meetings with senior advisors to discuss the related plans and has indicated in private conversations that he is pushing for "greater things" following the end of the Iran war. The strategy may include three main components: U.S. assurances to encourage American allies to form a regional alliance to contain Iran; advancing the next phase of Trump's Gaza plan to address the aftermath of the October 7 attacks and implement agreements between Israel and Lebanon, as well as a security agreement between Israel and Syria; and expanding the Abraham Accords to promote normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. The U.S. hopes that the new government formed after the Israeli elections on October 27 will cooperate with this strategy, but some officials have indicated that Trump still plans to push forward with the related proposals regardless of the election results in Israel. The plan is expected to take several weeks to finalize.
