The diesel problem that could spoil Bitcoin’s hopes for cheaper money
U.S. inventories of distillate fuel oil, which includes diesel and heating oil, fell below 100 million barrels in the week ended Oct. 30, even as the latest surveyed fuel prices declined. The smaller stock buffer leaves fuel costs a potential obstacle to inflation relief and easier financing for Bitcoin investors.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration's Nov. 4 report showed stocks of 99.26 million barrels, down from 102.82 million a week earlier. That 3.57-million-barrel decline left inventories 13% below their five-year average.
U.S. on-highway diesel averaged $6.29 a gallon on Nov. 2, down 6 cents in a week. EIA's surveyed residential heating-oil average fell 9.2 cents to $6.14 a gallon over the same period. Diesel prices include taxes; the heating-oil series excludes them.
Both fuels remained substantially more expensive than a year earlier: diesel was up $2.54 a gallon and residential heating oil was up $2.51.
There is also continuing refinery supply. Utilization increased to 94.5% from 92.8% in the week ended Oct. 30, although distillate production edged down to 5.154 million barrels a day from 5.161 million. Higher overall refinery activity therefore coexisted with a further draw on distillate stocks.
Less fuel in storage. Lower weekly fuel prices.
National distillate stocks fell below 100 million barrels. The latest surveyed diesel and heating-oil prices fell weekly, while staying higher than a year earlier.

Nov. 2, 2026: the same prices remained much higher than a year earlier. Weekly relief does not erase elevated fuel costs.

A smaller stock buffer can coexist with falling weekly prices; Bitcoin's financing risk remains conditional.
National stocks and surveyed fuel prices have different observation dates. Diesel includes taxes; residential heating oil excludes them. The 100-million mark is not an exhaustion boundary. Neither view measures inflation pass-through, Fed repricing or a Bitcoin reaction.

Supporting facts
- U.S. distillate fuel-oil stocks fell to 99.259 million barrels on October 30 from 102.824 million on October 23, a weekly decline of 3.565 million barrels. [1] [2]
- Distillate fuel oil includes diesel and heating oil; a national inventory observation below the round 100-million-barrel mark is not a forecast of fuel exhaustion. [1] [3] [4]
- U.S. on-highway diesel averaged $6.292 a gallon on November 2, down 6 cents from October 26 but $2.539 above a year earlier, according to EIA. [5]
- EIA's surveyed residential heating-oil average was $6.138 a gallon on November 2, down 9.2 cents in a week but $2.506 above a year earlier, excluding taxes. [3]
- Lower delivered diesel and heating-oil prices already qualify the immediate inflation-risk interpretation; sustained stock rebuilding and lower fuel costs would weaken it further. [5] [3] [1]
Method
Stock positions use a labelled linear 95--105 million-barrel scale. Fuel-price change positions use a common linear -$3 to +$3 per-gallon scale in both views. Prices and changes are EIA reported figures; no inflation or Bitcoin response is calculated.
Scope
National stocks and surveyed fuel prices have different observation dates. Diesel includes taxes; residential heating oil excludes them. The 100-million mark is not an exhaustion boundary. Neither view measures inflation pass-through, Fed repricing or a Bitcoin reaction.
